Synopsis : Rallia, jeune femme de 19 ans, s'en retourne au bled chercher ses racines. Elle cherche sa mère, Keltoum, qui l'a abandonnée quand elle était bébé. Dans ce paysage désolé, elle découvre son grand-père et sa tante Nedjma, considérée par tous comme folle. Mais c'est pour Keltoum que Rallia est venue. Les autres membres de la famille savent seulement qu'elle travaille dans un hôtel pour touristes à El Cantara. En compagnie de Nedjma, Rallia commence un voyage initiatique à travers une terre de pauvreté, de violence et d'intolérance, où elle trouvera sa vérité.

This film quickly draws you in close to the main female character Ralia and soon you are sharing with her, her journey to a lost and distant, dramatically-hilled country full of dust and dreams in search of her mother. We share with her the frustrations and the disappointment due to too many dreams. With her short hair Ralia is almost androgyneous and in her village it does not matter but as soon as she ventures outside we start to feel increasingly the patriarchal culture that rules the country and excuses the terrible behaviour towards women. The filmmaker deals with this subject with much sensitivity and reveals an often hidden oppression. We are struck by the tragic beauty of most of the women in this film and the violence and shere brutality of the hills people. As the film moves on comedy intertwines with mystery, beauty, solidarity of women and many more themes are touched upon which intermingled make up for a lovely, sweet tale of mother-daughter love and the trappings of the imagination of the human mind. The music is wonderful and altogether the film maker manages to paint a vivid picture of discovery and loss in the desert. Definitely recommended.

Courrez voir ce film. Beauté, justesse, émotion, simplicité, intelligence, errance. Un ovni en ce début d'année.
